Kōura is the Maori word for the indigenous New Zealand fresh-water shrimp, and the shape is also reminiscent of the woven baskets used traditional island cultures to trap or store seafood. David Trubridge cites nature as the ultimate source of inspiration, but also likes to refer to archetypal human forms, particularly baskets and other vessels.
As David Trubridge describes it, “Woven forms, which must be some of the oldest human artifacts, have always fascinated me. While we were sailing in the Pacific I learnt to weave hats and baskets out of coconut fronds, and still love to do this if I am sitting on a tropical beach. These things are symbols of humans and nature being in balance – of replenishable materials being used for their natural properties, not exploited in any way.”
